The new stoneware line is inspired by the rustic stoneware Korean pottery from 14th century Joseon Dynasty called Buncheong. Traditionally less refined, Buncheong-ware had a poetic quality to its rugged construction, brushed white slip and carved surface decoration. History informs the way in which I translated old techniques into new cultural-hybrids. My approach was to capture the historical qualities of the pots by introducing a darker stoneware clay, while using the brushwork, carving and China painting to present both old and new interpretations of the cloud motif. The Cloud Pear Bottle was wheel thrown and the shape was inspired by pear-shaped vessels from Korea.
