My second Flannel Animal series contains a flamingo, hedgehog, koala, panda, raven, rhino, squirrel, chicken, and gnu The Flannel Animal series is inspired by my work at the Kansas City Zoo and my husband. You may be wondering how the Flannel Animal series could relate to my husband. When Eric and I started dating he wore a cowboy plaid red shirt with breakaway buttons. I quickly discovered his closet only consisted of that single style shirt. As funny as it was to have a cartoon character for a partner, I tried my best to get him to wear something else. It took nearly 6 months, but I got him to wear something different. It just so happens to have been a blue version of the exact same shirt he had. We have made a lot more progress over the years, but I will always hold the memory of those flannel shirts dear. The Kansas City Zoo is the trigger for the inspiration, for when I first started at the zoo they had an employee party where guests were encouraged to wear plaid. Eric and I joked about our favorite animals at the zoo joining the fun by wearing plaid too. Through our humous discussion I drew my first character, the penguin in a green plaid shirt. Seeing the results of such an adorable critter in plaid inspired me to create more. The Paul Bunyan Polar Bear, Grandma Elephant, Fabulous Otter, Humble Lumberjack Wallaby, and Kid Zebra came to life. At this point I wanted to get my social media following involved, so I asked the community what their favorite animals were. After such a good response from people I had many more animals to add to the collection and it hasn’t stopped growing.
