Description
Moving from Uruguay to the United States at a young age impacted Valentina Trindade Soria’s life and it impacted her view on the importance that labels and materialistic items have to different people. Consumerism in the fashion industry became my main source of inspiration because of the influence it has on people even though it is just a shirt or handbag. Logos and popular prints help people feel as if they have a higher status in society because of what they can own. At the time Trindade Soria was creating “Protect Me From What I Want”, the artist was looking at Social Media and noticing the labels and trends that were influencing street fashion and crossing over from luxury and unattainable to now being in the hands of everyday consumers. Gucci had created a fall line full of mixed prints and patterns that was all over social media; it became a strong influence on pop culture and for other designers. The way Gucci was able to reach different social class levels through that platform and become a game changer, is what made them such a strong influence on this piece.
