GRETCHEN HUPFEL (1963-2002)

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Gretchen Hupfel graduated magna cum laude with a BA from Brown University and earned an MFA from the University of Delaware. A conceptually oriented artist, she taught at the Kansas City Art Institute and at the University of Georgia in Athens. Her work was shown in over 30 exhibitions in galleries and alternative spaces from New York to Atlanta from 1989 to 2002. A prolific artist, Gretchen’s work is in many collections including the Delaware Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, American Century, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Citibank, Philip Morris, and Sprint. Her work received reviews in Artforum, Art in America, the New Art Examiner, and Art Papers, among other publications. Hupfel died in 2002 at the age of 39 after battling schizophrenia for much of her life. Time Spent, a posthumous retrospective of her works, was organized at The Delaware Contemporary in 2005.

THE GRETCHEN HUPFEL ENDOWMENT FUND

A close friend of the Hupfel family initiated an endowment in the name of Gretchen Hupfel to underwrite a bi-annual symposium and a Gretchen Hupfel Curator of Contemporary Art position at The Delaware Contemporary. For those who remember Gretchen, this named endowment not only commemorates her death, but celebrates her life and legacy as a passionate and remarkably talented artist.
