About This Work

A priceless porcelain jar teeters on its pedestal while a heroic vase leaps into action and a mug… well, the mug might’ve started this mess. Out with the old, in with the new—these mugs are on a mission to prove contemporary clay can be priceless too. The jar features an intricately carved dragon, made using traditional relief techniques the artist learned while studying abroad in Jingdezhen, China. Two mugs gleefully ride the dragon as it chases its own tail, while a third dangles from the tip, teasing the beast. The attached lid keeps things (somewhat) stable—but just barely. A chaotic blend of reverence and rebellion, this piece sends both the pedestal and tradition off balance.

Allyson George’s introduction to art was shaped by her early experiences and close connection to Disney. As a child, her mother would take her to Disney and Wyland gallery signings, where she received feedback directly from artists. Before discovering clay, George’s dream was to become an animator — a passion that continues to inform her work today. Her ceramics merge the playful parody of cartoons with the whimsical notion that pottery might spring to life.

Both ceramics and traditional cel animation demand discipline, patience, and an embrace of repetition. For George, the process of shaping, molding, and firing clay parallels the painstaking frame-by-frame construction of animation — each requiring precision, timing, and a balance between technical mastery and creative spontaneity.

George infuses humor and imagination into her work, drawing inspiration from her background, environment, and the unpredictable nature of clay itself. Her ceramic vessels often transcend their utilitarian origins, transforming into lively characters that engage with one another and the spaces they inhabit.

Her artistic vision centers on creating works that are both visually compelling and narratively rich. Through form, surface, and occasional 2D animation, George tells stories that celebrate joy, curiosity, and the material’s inherent personality. Rooted in dedication and passion, her practice reflects a lifelong love of process, play, and the expressive potential of both ceramics and animation.
