About This Work

Gerhard Andrées was born in 1936 as the son of a master painter in the Mecklenburg town of Plau am See. In the years 1961 to 1963 he graduated from the Werkkunstschule in Wuppertal, then until 1968 at the College of Fine Arts Berlin. Here he was a pupil for free painting with Peter Janssen, 1969 as its master student. In the same year he was awarded the Europe Prize for Painting in Belgium, and two years later the Art Prize of the Youth of the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 1971 he has collaborated with the sculptor Joachim Schmettau and the painter and graphic artist Peter Ackermann. In 1972 Andrées became an employee of the Staatliche Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz Berlin.
