About This Work

Izsys Archer is a member of the Black Student Union – BSU and a senior at the Kansas City Artist Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Photography (anticipated: 2022)

The presence of the Black female body summons truth. The inherently intimate spaces our vessels inhabit sustain the weight of our most vulnerable inner thoughts, emotions and ways of being. I constantly engage in the act of image making through photography to wander on a journey of self possession and representation that emphasizes the fragile, tangible experience of Black womanhood, femininity, and matrilineal power. The perpetual use of self-portraiture becomes a performance of identity as I interrogate notions of domesticity, memory, and Black iconography.

My iPhone has become one of my most resourceful tools of capturing and editing images. I’m constantly taking screenshots and voice memos on my devices. From my ever-expanding archive that’s cyclically reused within my practice, I have been able to navigate the physical, metaphysical, and digital spaces the Black body occupies. Radical acts of vulnerability tells a narrative of ancestral legacy. Distortions, colors, and textures of love and mislove, emphasize placement and vital contemporary methods of communication, especially with my momma who lives 490 miles away. The curation of mixed media collages, installation, and video has allowed me to explore familial, platonic, and social relationships as a device of reclamation and discovery.<3
