Emily Connell creates mixed media sculptures that looks for the balance between religious practitioner and cynic. By using the pages of a book of importance or knowledge she creates a ceramic reliquary that contains the ashes of the book. By adding plaster and cutting away at the sculpture, this piece is infused with beauty and meaning. This contemporary sculpture is created with porcelain, plaster, and the ashes of The Holy Bible. It measures 4.5” in diameter.

"I make my work in two stages. First I create objects inspired from religion, and configure them into a scene. Next I use my body to create a context and purpose for the objects. The combination of photographs and relics create a narrative while also heightening the mystery of spiritual purpose."
